Scarlett Johansson’s Lucky Horseshoe Tattoo

She’s not the first and certainly won’t be the last to join the tribe of inked-up people opting for a lucky horseshoe tattoo. Scarlett Johansson revealed her newest piece of body art back in 2012, a lucky horseshoe on her ribcage with adorned with the words ‘Lucky You.’

She had the work done whilst in Paris, using the services of tattooist Fuzi Uvtpk after being wowed by his work at an artist-in-residence exhibition of his work at Le Salon in Paris earlier that year. Uvtpk’s work covers a broad range of subjects, from centaurs armed with bow and arrow to more risqué etchings. This lucky horseshoe tattoo was an addition to her New York City tribute tattoo that adorns her wrist, a sunrise over the sea on her left forearm, and two circles linked by the letter ‘A’ on her ankle. The tattooist Johansson chose for her latest tatt is renowned for his somewhat artless and self-proclaimed ‘ignorant style’ of work. The lucky horseshoe has admittedly attracted both negative and positive media attention, with some critics claiming that the horseshoe looks like it has been drawn by a child. It’s certainly cartoon-like in appearance rather than traditionally draw, but the artist himself claims that his work carries with it ‘an ironic twist and self-confident assertion.’ So while the true sentiments of this particular lucky horseshoe tattoo remain secret, we can be sure that the actress is making an artistic statement with it.

Just the lucky ones

Talking of which, Johansson is characteristically guarded when it comes to her tattoos. She explains that although they all ‘make her happy’ in some way, the meanings behind them – which we can only guess at – are to ‘remain private.’ When questioned about her body art on the David Letterman show, the actress said that the picture of her freshly inked tattoo wasn’t meant for the public eye: ‘It’s not a tattoo that I expected everybody to see, obviously.’ She went on to explain that this was a ‘personal photograph’ which the tattoo artist took of her and misguidedly decided to share with a few people. ‘And now you have it on your desk.’
When Letterman detected some embarrassment in his guest, Johansson went on to explain that this particular tattoo –the lucky horseshoe one – ‘wasn’t meant for everybody, just the lucky ones!’ We know that the new addition to her body inkings came fairly soon after her split from Nate Naylor in October 2012, so perhaps the words were inked to put out a sarcastic or teasing message to the man who undoubtedly lost out on the love of one of the world’s most beautiful women…

Lucky charm

The lyrics to the song ‘Amy’ refer to Winehouse’s lucky horseshoe tattoo: ‘Did you tattoo a lucky charm to keep you out of harm’s way, warding off all evil signs, but it never really kept you safe.’
